“It’s about using the tools available to manage the disease and being responsible for living well.”
Bruce clearly remembers the moment he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 40—his wife cried, but he stayed calm. “It’s not life threatening,” he told her. “We can do this.”
That mindset has carried him through nearly three decades of living with diabetes. Now at 67, Bruce maintains an A1C of 6.0 with the help of Dexcom G7 CGM and his AID system. He’s living life to the fullest—spending time with his grandkids, traveling, and doing everything he loves.
Living with diabetes has made him more mindful of his health and more intentional about how he cares for himself. “It’s about using the tools available to manage the disease, and being responsible for living well,” he says.
As an advocate Bruce wants to challenge common misconceptions about diabetes. “I eat what I want, when I want,” he shares. “I like ice cream, bakery items. The disease is manageable.” His experience shows that diabetes doesn’t mean giving up the things you enjoy, you just have to learn how to enjoy them responsibly.
To anyone newly diagnosed, Bruce offers reassurance. “It’s not a death sentence,” he says. “It’s a condition that requires daily management, but with the right approach and the right tools, you can live fully.” His story is one of calm confidence and steady commitment—proof that living well with diabetes is more than possible.
