“Diabetes taught me that health isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being mindful, celebrating progress, and being grateful for every day I get to show up and feel strong.”

For Kate, living with type 1 diabetes isn’t just something she manages; it’s something that has inspired her to live with intention, strength, and connection. Diagnosed at 11 years old, Kate founded Sugardop Sweetwear Co., just three months after her diagnosis. The inspiration for the name of her company came from her mom, who used to say, “Kate, it’s time for a sugar drop,” when it was time for a fingerstick.

Through Sugardrop, she creates stylish, functional accessories for people who wear diabetes devices—products that help others feel confident and seen. Through her online platforms, she helps raise awareness for people facing the same challenges as her. As an advocate, Kate wants people like her to know: “Diabetes doesn’t define you—you define it. Diabetes can be made your own—something that fuels you to live your life your way.”

Kate also hopes to shed light on the reality of living with an invisible illness. “People don’t see how much work goes into managing diabetes. It’s a full-time job that never stops,” she explains. “Every decision, every number, every meal matters. We fight hard every day just to keep ourselves alive and to thrive.” That effort, she says, deserves recognition and respect.

To anyone newly diagnosed, Kate understands how overwhelming it can feel at first, but she’s living proof that with time, support, and self-compassion, life with diabetes can be full of purpose and possibility.

Kate’s story is one of resilience, creativity, and advocacy. Whether she’s designing for Sugardrop, speaking to the diabetes community, or simply living her truth, she continues to inspire others to embrace their journey and define it on their own terms.
