“All of the dreams and aspirations you have are more than possible, and type 1 diabetes will come along with you.”

Reflective. Strengthening. Beautiful. Those are the three words that Sofia would use to describe her life with type 1 diabetes. Her journey has been one of deep self-discovery that has led her to see diabetes not as a burden, but as a source of pride.

“Everything you do to manage it displays a level of strength and perseverance that you should be so proud of,” she says. And that’s the message she centers her advocacy around: There is beauty in diabetes, and it deserves to be recognized.

She also wants to shed light on some of the harsher realities of living with type 1 diabetes, especially the unpredictability—something she wishes more people understood.

Learning to manage this unpredictability takes time, and for those who are new to their diagnosis, she encourages them to embrace the changes rather than resist them. “You are learning how to take care of your body in a different way, and it’s important to give yourself grace in the journey you are starting.”

Above all, Sofia’s message is one of hope and possibility. “Diabetes will become woven into your identity, into who you are,” she says. “All of the dreams and aspirations you have are more than possible, and type 1 diabetes will come along with you.”
