“Please don’t look at people with diabetes differently. They are not defined by their condition—they simply live with circumstances that are a little different from yours.”
MiYeong is a powerhouse of advocacy, innovation, and compassion. Living in Korea, she’s not only a seasoned software developer—with years at Samsung Electronics and Motorola—but also the founder and representative of the Korean Society of Type 1 Diabetes (KST1D), known as SugarTree.
Since 2015, she has dedicated herself to protecting the rights of people with diabetes, inspired by her son’s diagnosis with type 1 diabetes in 2012. MiYeong quickly realized that managing diabetes isn’t just about medical routines—it was about reshaping systems and building community. Through KST1D, she’s created a space where patients and families can share their stories and find strength in solidarity.
MiYeong has also played a pivotal role in shaping diabetes policy in Korea. She helped revise the Infant and Toddler Care Act and School Health Act for children with type 1 diabetes, introduced CGM technology, secured insurance coverage, and amended the Medical Device Act.
Her efforts led to type 1 diabetes being categorized as a pancreatic disability (planned to be implemented in 2026), unlocking broader government support. KST1D received awards from the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Minister’s Award from the Ministry of Science and ICT.
In 2022, MiYeong authored a book to raise awareness about type 1 diabetes, titled, “We Did Not Choose Type 1 Diabetes.” And in 2026, her story will reach even more people through the upcoming Korean film, “Sugar,” inspired by her advocacy and featuring Dexcom CGM technology.
Her work continues to empower families, influence policy, and reshape public understanding—proving that advocacy, when driven by love and determination, can change lives. “Please don’t look at people with diabetes differently,” she says. “They are not defined by their condition—they simply live with circumstances that are a little different from yours.”
