“Diabetes is not a one-size-fits-all condition.”
“Dang. What a ride.” That’s how Kaye sums up her journey with type 1 diabetes. That ride has been full of unexpected, challenging, and sometimes frustrating moments—but it’s also been rich with growth, resilience, and self-discovery. From the day she was diagnosed in 1983, Kaye knew her life had changed. What she didn’t expect was how much strength she’d find along the way.
As an advocate, Kaye shares this message: “Your story is yours. Never be afraid.” She encourages others not to let fear dictate how they live with diabetes or how they talk about it. For Kaye, advocacy is about empowerment—helping others find their voice and use it.
Kaye’s own voice has reached far. She’s actively involved with several diabetes advocacy groups both in the U.S. and globally.
“I want fellow diabetics and legislators to know that no matter your circumstances, you can use your voice for good,” she says. Her mantra? A line from Kenny Rogers: “When you put your heart in it, it’ll take you everywhere.”
To someone diagnosed today, her advice would be this: “Diabetes is not a one-size-fits-all condition. Make friends with your body.” For Kaye, being aware of her own rhythms and being her own best friend are the keys to living well with diabetes.
Kaye’s advocacy is rooted in truth, compassion, and a touch of humor. “Never underestimate the power of an old lady with an iPhone and a Zoom meeting,” she jokes. Her story is proof that diabetes doesn’t have to be a limitation—it can be a platform for change, connection, and courage.
